yes, this command makes a backup of the data, but the instance must be stopped.
# ./dsadm backup <INSTANCE_PATH> <BACKUP_PATH>
Basically it copies the DB files under <INSTANCE_PATH> to the <BACKUP_PATH> directory.
To have a full backup of your instance, you still need to backup the dse.ldif file!
