    Hi,

I have followed the steps mentioned in : chavalis.blogspot.com and have installed Virtualbox and Oracle Linux 5.8 . However, prior to installing Oracle , there are some housekeeping tasks which are required to be performed like : executing the command : wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-el5.repo

However, I am getting network error. I have downloaded the public-yum-el5.repo file onto my Windows system

I also, think that later commands like :

    # yum update
    # yum install gcc
    # yum install kernel-devel
    # yum install kernel-uek-devel
    # yum install oracle-validated

may not work due to network error

Could you please help in resolving this ?

    Regards,
    Haider

Well, an error message with no context isn't any more helpful than context with no error message.

What were you doing that resulted in this error?

Pl confirm that you can open up the Firefox browser in your Linux VM and can access websites such as Google and CNN. If you cannot, you need to fix your networking setup and/or Firefox options before wget will work as expected.

xclock must run without error before OUI can proceed & succeed.

the OUI is a java based GUI application. It requires x-windows to run. You will need to have an x-server on your desktop (x-ming is free and light-weight). The linux session will need to be able to redirect 'x' output to the x-server on your desktop. This is most easily accomplished by allowing x- 11 port forwarding on your ssh connection to the linux box.

Thanks for the inputs. I have successfully managed to install Oracle. However, 2 problems persist :

    1. Whenever, I start the VM , login as root and type sqlplus, the error comes :

    [root@localhost ~]# sqlplus
    bash: sqlplus: command not found
    [root@localhost ~]# su - oracle
    [oracle@localhost ~]$ sqlplus
    -bash: sqlplus: command not found

The same happens when I login as Oracle user as well.

    2. The issue in step 1 is resolved each time the following commands :

    # export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
    # export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1
    # export ORACLE_SID=orcl
    # export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH
    # export TNS_ADMIN=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/network/admin

After this , I get the below mentioned errors :

    [oracle@localhost ~]$ export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1
    [oracle@localhost ~]$ sqlplus
