I had this message with Suse Prof 9.3 and Oracle 10.2.0.
This message is due to an error in the dbstart script. To solve it, you have to edit this file, locate this line:
ORACLE_HOME_LISTNER=/u01/app/oracle/..../product/10.2.0/db_1 (you have to put the dir that you are using in your own installation)
In my case, this was the solution.
This message is due to sloppy work on the dbstart script. As well as setting the ORACLE_HOME_LISTNER to his own path vikrkuma set OARTAB to a setting that fails on Solaris.
So the fix is to comment out these lines and set the variables appropriately in the dbora script for your installation. The comments at the top of the script suggest this.
More sloppiness, the script doesn't specify what script interpreter to use and doesn't run in Solaris sh because it uses "export VAR=val" and "COUNT=$((COUNT+1))". These can be cured by either rewriting the script or adding "#!/bin/bash" to the script to request the bash shell.
The dbstart script starts both the database and the listener, but the dbshut script only stops the database.
It's obvious these scripts were casually tested on vikrkuma's Linux machine and then just put into the distribution without further testing.
