Import from a RAC db to stand alone DB over the network.

Hi Gurus,

We are performing import from RAC DB (PROD - ASM) to Non-RAC DB (TEST-ASM) but failing becuase of network issue. We are having space issue on local disk of TEST DB so we cant transfer the dump file. Please let me different approches which we can try. Below mentioned, are the approches we are tyring to perform.

1) We have export dump in chunks of 1-10 each of 10 GB. Can we transfer dump files one by one over the network and then import locallly.
2) We are tyring to export strucuture only with rows=n and that cane be imported successfully. But, can we try importing the data only once strucuture is imported.

Note. We are having 20 GB space on local disk of TEST DB.

Regards,
Nikhil Mehta.

    Hi Friend

Use 'Network_link' Parameter. It will work..

Note : Create database links in both the instances and give required privileges

    SQL> host expdp directory=dump_dir network_link=primdb logfile=scott.log schemas=scott

    SQL> host impdp network_link=orcl schemas=scott

    Thanks

    Hi LaserSoft,

We are not using expdp. We are using imp/exp. Also, network is very slow. While importing its taking 10 hours to import 10GB file.

Can you tell is there any way to pause import and start it again. Like we are having 10Gb dump files , can we do trasfer-import-pause, transfer-import-pause for the 10 GB dump files.

You need to split your export e.g. schema wise or table wise.

Then export of one schema , transfer it and import . In the mean time you can start export of next schema in source.

    Hi Rajesh,

We are importing only one singe schema. There are many 10GB dump files summing to 140 GB.

If all files are part of one dump , then you need to transfer all and then need to start import.

Therefore it is better to split export .

    Thanks

    - Why don't you use expdp/impdp - In this case suspended job can be resumed

    - You can use maxfilesize parameter of export command so that maximum size of the dump file can be limited. The export will be split over various dump files which can be copied over net one by one.

    Hi,
check the possibility to "live" duplicate the database via RMAN by using "duplicate database to 'aux'" feature !

That´s the fastest and best way to "clone" your prod database because RMAN will copy "database block´s"

We use it that way and the duplicate runs around three hours instead of 16 hours for a logical "dpump" process.

    Hi,

Several dump files summing 140GB, feels like it will take several hours to import, and is a not so straightforward process.
I would suggest a duplicate "from active database".

it is transported throgh the network, and no backup is needed. you just need to setup the dest database correctly, and you are good to go.

    Hi All,

    Thanks for your replies.

We have cross platform High to low endian migration, so we didnt go for RMAN. Network was also an issue since bandwidth was very less. So we compressed the dump files with gnzip, transfered the same over the weekend and imported. We tried Transportablespace amd Impdp feature too but were facing many space related issue.

Again thanks for all the replies. Thread can be closed.

    Regards,
    Nikhil Mehta.
