        [root@VM-PAGRAC3 disks]# cd /dev/oracleasm/disks/
        [root@VM-PAGRAC3 disks]# ls -ltr
        total 0

My systemadmin showed me the following as rawdisks and we should be able to create asm on rawdisk right?
        [root@VM-PAGRAC4 /]# ls -lart /dev/sd*

you need to use the partitioned disk name .
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA1 /dev/sdb1   ---> we need to use partiioned one sdb1 not sdb.

You mean to say "/dev/sdb1" is partitioned and "/dev/sdb" is not?? How to identify? both are showing same attributes in ls -lart /dev/sd* ??

            again,
            [root@VM-PAGRAC3 grid]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA1 /dev/sdb1
Marking disk "DATA1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]

oracle asm disks needs to be have single partitioned.

/dev/sdb is the disk presented to system then we need to single partitioned it and it will create /dev/sdb1.

you are right at this time by using /dev/sdb1, but it failed.
              /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA1 /dev/sdb1
Marking disk "DATA1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]
so post the corresponding error message in logfile
              /var/log/oracleasm
post appropriate error message related to above createdisks statement.

Unable to open device "/dev/sdb1": Device or resource busy
Ask you System Administrator to make sure the device is mounted and partitioned correctly.

If needed clear the diskheader and repartitioned it and try again to create asm disk.

you may want to try this method to create disks.
                  /usr/sbin/asmtool -C -l /dev/oracleasm -n DISK1 -s /dev/sdb1 -a force=yes
                  after creation of disk use
                   list disks
                  to make sure it created.

But sdb1, sda1 are hosting bootfiles(linux os) and /oracle mountpoint. I cannot use them.

What to do? How to make sdc a partition to sdc1? I have got 1GB space in sdc and need to make it voting disk.
                      Please help.
