You will want to look at the classes in the package: intradoc.search
Note: Oracle does not provide the original Java source code; they only provide the compiled code.
You can take a look at the wfReleaseDocument idoc function if you want to allow searching on content while in the workflow.
Also, if you want to retrieve the content, you can check for services that use the RevisionSelectionMethod parameter. You can point to the "Latest" instead of the "LatestReleased" Revision. You can browse the services doc to see which services are available for this.
The core content server classes are in idcserver.jar

Also if you have separate contribution-consumption websites then wfReleaseDocument can be used on the contribution environment with archiver specifically told to ignore workflow items (approval triggers the replication.)
One other thought, can you simply tell the SSXA object to append &SSContributor=1 to the URL?
