listener is NOT required to access local database.

How do I ask a question on the forums?

It is unclear exactly what you are doing so it is not possible to say what you are doing wrong.

If the listener has NOT been started, errors get thrown from OS command below.

    lsnrctl status
    [oracle@localhost ~]$ lsnrctl stop

    The command completed successfully

realize that we don't even know your Operating System name & version and solution may be OS dependent.

    also notice you should provide

    DB version
    select * from v$version;
    and OS version

    in every thread you post

Thank you so much for all the replies but still my question is unanswered.
My database version is 10.2.0.1 which is installed on OEL4 version.
when i try to start the listener it throws all the errors mentioned in subject line.
I'm unable to copy data from my vmvare so that i can give you better understanding about the problem by pasting my listener.ora,tnsname.ora and listener status

you could copy the content here if you installed vmware tools that enable copy & paste features.

consider to install VirtualBox & then a configured VM that includes Oracle DB from http://otn.oracle.com

    Start by posting your listener.ora.
Then cut-and-pastes of the actual errors you are experiencing, and the context in which they are happening.

Then check other posts for some of your errors. The 525 error, in particular, is a permissions problem, and might indicate the sorts of issues that were discussed in [url https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=897030] this post, which has a nice example of posting the errors, the context in which they arose and the listener.ora that gave rise to them.
