There are three SQL exams available currently, but only one results in a certification. Passing the 1Z0-047 Oracle Database SQL Expert exam will grant you an Oracle Certified Expert certification in SQL. Be aware that this is not an easy test, though. The following article discusses the three available exams:

    http://www.gocertify.com/articles/oracle-sql-certification-1z0-051-or-1z0-047.html

That said, I agree that knowledge of SQL is very useful for a database developer even if SQL isn't their primary task. My own experience includes DBA-level work as well as SQL and PL/SQL development. I've had coworkers in previous jobs that were primarily C# or Java developers writing apps for Oracle with SQL skills that left much to be desired. They routinely embedded badly structured and poor-performing queries into their code that I was forced to correct after the fact when it was found to cause problems in production.

It isn't a certification, only an exam, but IMHO consider looking at the 1z0-051 SQL exam.

This gives the chance to go over some SQL basics, which is what you need in the first place.

My opinion is people studying for 1z0-047 should at least study for 1z0-051 first; and then perhaps skip the 1z0-051 exm and go forward with 1z0-047.
( There are some trainers training people at the 1z0-047 exam; and skipping the basics of 1z0-051, and IMHO producing some unbalanced certified candidates, ( I'd kind of make 1z0-051 mandatory for 1z0-047 though it would cost affect a small number of people who can't afford it, the overall effects IMHO would be worthwhile).

    .....

A (perhaps less well known) but now somewhat expensive alternative path is to consider the MySQL developer certification:

    http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:MDEV

    and exams 1z0-871/1z0-872

This gives certification to OCP level.

Be aware MySQL's SQL dislect is a little more 'quirky' .... but my background is more Classic Oracle SQL (An users of some other dialects would find that quirky).
If you use both or switch from one to the other you may need to accept some things are a little different.

This also goes beyond some straight SQL.
    ....

If your're dealing with Oracle Classic Enterrise Backend then don't go for the MySQL certiifcation.

Well if we're going a bit far afield for exams that cover SQL basics, he might consider going even further. Oracle purists might want to cover their eyes as this isn't an Oracle cert...

The CIW certification *1D0-541: CIW Database Design Specialist* has a significant portion of the test devoted to SQL. It's vendor-neutral, so they deal with ANSI SQL, which is perfectly acceptable from an Oracle standpoint. The remainder of the test covers RDBMS concepts such as normalization, security, and design methodology (also useful for a developer). It's not as good a SQL exam as 1Z0-051, but passing it provides a certification. If you study SQL for this exam as part of your preparation for 1Z0-047, I think the results from a career standpoint would be better than using 1Z0-051 for that purpose.

Well I didn't think I was goint that far afield. MySQL is under Oracle Stewardship and umbrella currently. I believe its perfectly valid to mention it.

That said the CIW Database Design Specialist: (Exam 1D0-541) does appear to cover relational dataase fundamentals well, and I have several times on this forum seen concerns that current Oracle training/certifications do not cover that well (and I am prepared to be corrected by examples in that viewpoint).

1z0-047 is an approximate superset 1z0-051 ; ... and I will admit I have concerns (bee in my bonnet) about relatively new SQL people being pointed at 1z0-047 too early without enough practical experience. I guess I have it in my mind at least one traiing institure in India is doing this.

I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't. Your post simply made my think of 1D0-541 as another option.

1z0-047 is an approximate superset 1z0-051
Almost a perfect superset -- 38 of the 41 1Z0-051 topics are part of 1Z0-047. Studying for the Fundamentals test is equivalent to studying for about 30% of the 1Z0-047 exam. That said, you've seen me say over and over in this forum that the most important part of the certification process is learning the information. Taking (and hopefully passing) the test is nice, but ultimately less valuable to someone's career than the information gained through the study process. Taking a test that doesn't provide a certification is even more pointless.

I can see studying for 1Z0-051 (but not taking the test) and then studying the advanced topics for SQL Expert (and taking the 1Z0-047 test). However, I just don't agree with treating 1Z0-051 as a pre-requisite to be passed before moving on to 047. If someone needs an interim test as a goal to make them study basic SQL prior to 1Z0-047, then the CIW test makes a reasonable choice.

I have been thinking slightly on our debate .... ( and have these rushed thoughts before heading for bed).

    * I am sure we both agree on the certification study journey and knowledge gained being more important than the end certificate (except perhaps the certificate is needed for job interview or OPN partner points)
    * wrt 1z0-051 .... Taking a test that doesn't provide a certification is even more pointless.
... IMHO it may a have little value to some
[1] ... they can still say exam passed on CV .... maybe that helps get a job.
[2] it is chance to gain experience of certification exams ... 1z0-047 is a tough introduction to certification exams.
[3] It is a chance to get a quicker certification exam 'win'
[3] It is a cheaper exam (as it it online available and not 'high stakes' ... ie does not give a certifcation by itself).
    .... 1z0-051 is about 2/3 the cost of 1z0-047
But I am willing to accept this is a perhaps a small set of positives; and thier may be no point for many.

I really don't like the fact that anyone wanting an Oracle (Enterprise Edition) SQL certification (without PL/SQL) has to go for SQL OCE. An earlier certification would be better.

I generally like the CIW Database Design Specialist: (Exam 1D0-541) content .....
I would certainly modify my earlier idea of 1z0-047 having as a pre-requisite an earlier SQL exam / certification as a pre-req ....
And would certainly have 1z0-051 or CIW Database Design Specialist: (Exam 1D0-541) on the pre-req list ...
( There are precedents for non-oracle exams/certs being acceptable in lieu of an oracle exam .... eg LPIC-1 for 1z0-402 )
( There is however IMHO no precedent for an OCE exam having another exam as a precedent ).

.... Apologies to original poster .... I may have sidetracked your orginal question with a slight debate.

Be warned that 1Z0-047 Oracle Database SQL Expert exam is very difficult. You can't pass that exams without dumps if you don't have 5+ year experience with Oracle SQL.

We've had this conversation before. This is not true and it's not a wise thing to say.

    true.

    false.

That statement is not true; there are people who break that statement. There are some bright people out there.

However the 5 yeas experience is possibly a good indicator ... the 'E' in 'OCE' is meant to be EXPERT.

It anything a lot of questions are set in a way that helps people out; well it helps you out if you know the subject matter in question.

Edited by: bigdelboy on 16-Jan-2013 01:37 . Have modified this post as I am in a good mood and the parent post has been edited to a more acceptable statement.

Sorry @Oracle guys. Deleted the offending word.

But fact is that 1Z0-047 Oracle Database SQL Expert is more difficult than other comparable industry exams.
