In the define selection criteria screen you have to add parameters and then use the parameters prefixed with # in the SQL expression... Once you've done that then the wizard should generate the fields into the input variable xsd...
Hope this helps...
'#' I didn't get your point. do you mean like this select #empno, #empid from base_table;
select empno, empid from base table WHERE empno = #empno_value
empno_value will be the input parameter that you intent to pass via a field in the input variable...
Yes, but here I am getting the input parameter from other table using database adapter, so I am using an assign activity to map the values.
I have a question, if the XSD doesn't get generated automatically can we extend existing XSD of select operation to include input variable.
Extending the xsd by yourself doesn't help. Follow the link provided earlier in the post and you should be able to get your issue solved.

When you use select operation, you can see the fields values/definition in the output variables and not in the input.
As Vlad mentioned, in the input parameter you will see only parameters you've defined (if at all) in your wizard.
I hoped that answer your question.

Thanks for your response, now i am getting a new problem. Actually the input parameter that i am getting from other database adapter is of type timestamp and I have to match this value with other field which is also a type of timestamp, if this two values are equal then i have to retrieve all the value related to timestamp. I used assign activity for mapping purpose, but bpel by default converting this timestamp value into 2013-01-20T00:00:00.000-05:00 this format, hence the other field which is of type timestamp is not understanding and is throwing error.
Thanks arik and vlad,
Solved the issue myself.
