It would be helpful if you said what the error was but I'm guessing it's timing out? Either way the thing you need to remember with attributes is that they are dynamically calculated and depending on the design can impact performance hugely.
The quick answer would be to use the 'Navigate without data' option in SV, which strictly speaking you should be doing anyway or any deep zooms. Then refresh with the option off and see how it fares.
Sorry, I should have posted the error. Yes-it is timing out.
I tried what you suggested-navigate without date. Now, I get a new error:
'XML load error. DTD is prohibited.'
According to Oracle that still relates to a timeout error: SmartView Error "XML Load Error: DTD is prohibited [ID 1059964.1]

You may need to reboot, I've seen it make a difference without the need.

Yes, we have tried updating all your suggestions, they were already suggested for the timeout issue by Oracle. Still no luck.
