    Options for more readable scaling?

I have an application that views and edits images of written documents that have been scanned in. Usually, these images are going to have very high resolution, so they are scaled down to fit the viewable screen by default.

The problem is, the scaling tends to make the images ugly and unreadable. If I view the same document in Windows Photo Viewer, scaled to the same size, it looks much smoother and more readable. Windows Photo Viewer seems to apply some sort of anti-aliasing or smoothing algorithm to its scaled documents to achieve this effect. My question is, are there any such options available in JavaFX, that I could use to make scaled documents look better?
