This is a solaris forum, and I'm on oracle linux 6.3 at the moment, so what I say here may not apply to all *nix installations.
Normally this questions is answered by man df and man du though on my linux here info df and info du and +df --help+ and +du --help+ also work.
On some production installations the man pages etc may not be installed. However man pages are available here under docs.oracle.com here:
... you need section 1 user commands.
Still I will probably still need to feed for today....
The commands ask refer to disk free and disk used, the former is filesystem based and the latter directory based.
