Update of ALL EXAMs page .... I dont like it and issues:

I see on the certification website the certification - all exams - page has just been altered from a table format to a fancy application basd format.

Can I say I dont like it. I know I prefer punch cards ( as mentioned in the oracle magazine ) to this new gui stuff but I did prefer the old code sort list of exams.

And this seems to render a little slower.

.... Perhaps I'll get used to the new organisation.

..... anyway the page renders Okay on ie 9.0

But on firefox Firefox/3.6.28 I get:
<!-- OU HOME PAGE MAIN CONTAINER AREA -- STARTS -->
... But my OL 6.3 fixfox ESR 10.0.11 seems ok ... so I'm probably just using a downrev firefox.

... Still at least beta exams reamin untouched. For now:

PS: In passing I note the following topic for 1z0-146: ( http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=5001&get_params=p_exam_id:1Z0-146 ) ... has a topic of Hand exceptions (and has had so for some time ... which is mind boggling.

In the guide I'm writing on 1Z0-146, I have taken that to mean various gestures that you can make with your hand that people might take exception to.
Lots of illustrations in that chapter. :)

For the record - I like the old page better too! As you may have noticed, we are getting a complete overhaul on our site - page-by-page. Some changes are better than others. Hopefully in the end, the good will outweigh the bad! There are some exciting new track pages coming over the next few months, so stay tuned!

At least I know someone is looking at the website!

Well you know bigdelboy and I are. No one else is... which is why there are so many forum threads with titles like 'What is an Oracle certification and how would I go about getting one?'

I sort of accept that grouping by application/version is probably more helpful for most people than exam code; though not have the exam code would be a disaster also:

I know at Least 3 reasons why I don't like this page:

Taking the Database 11g Section as an example:

    Oracle Database 11g
    . Oracle Database 11g Certified Master Exam | 11GOCM
. Oracle Database 11g Certified Master Upgrade Exam | 11GOCMU
    . Oracle Database 11g: Administration II | 1Z0-053
. Oracle Database 11g: New Features for Administrators | 1Z0-050
    . Oracle Database 11g: Administration I | 1Z0-052
    . Oracle Database 11g: Performance Tuning | 1Z0-054
    . Oracle Database 11g: New Features for 9i OCPs | 1Z0-055
. Oracle Real Application Clusters 11g Release 2 and Grid Infrastructure Administration | 1Z0-058
    . Oracle Database 11g Essentials | 1Z0-514
    . Oracle Database 11g Data Warehousing Essentials | 1Z0-515
    . Oracle Database 11g Security Essentials | 1Z0-528
    . Oracle Real Application Clusters 11g Essentials | 1Z0-593

    1) The ordering appears also random .... I suspected it was OCM, OCP, OCA, OCE, OCS then alphabetic ... but it doesn't seem to be that either! It isn't alphabetic and it isn't by exam code.
    2) I don't like '|' separator for the exam codes .... it looks wrong. I have a love affair with parenthesis (and my late Engish Teacher Ronnie would almost turn in his grave at my use of them) ... but that would probably be better than '|' which if used to separate columns should probably be lined up .... a colon might also work. Using '|' just means it seems to be missing a border.
    3) The mixed use and non use of the ':' after 'Oracle Database 11g' just adds to the apparent messingness. It's probably that way in the Title's in the certification database ... but this page just illustrates inconsistency.

+... Quite frankly this sort of poor layout is the stuff I normally produce myself on the first draft's of a form/report until the tester/reviewer/customer tells me to tidy it up for the end user before they get it in production.+

Edited by: bigdelboy on Jan 26, 2013 1:27 AM ( Hmmm .. nearely every in section is ordered by exam code except ( Oracle Database 11g: Administration II | 1Z0-053 ) ... which seems to break the rule.

IMHO, the new interface looks fine to me.
May be they have tried to just categorize everything in one single page making it look easy for a person who really wants to do a certification based on his previous relevant experience . No offense

Don't worry about the offence ... its me who is probably more offending the page designer / tester .....

... I appreciate the categorization .... in fact it has to be the right way to go. But there are smehow also some aspects of the rendering of this page that freak me.

Maybe its the shading getting lighter down the section, maybe font sizes, maybe colours ( colors US), maybe spacing, maybe relative heading pages. The jagged '|' separaror and exam code down the right side. Maybe its he page is longer and takes longer to scroll up and down.

In fact I think the way the shading changes as I scroll the page up and down between sections is unnerving me. That with a little bit more time to render. The previous form seemed so much more positive.

... I'm not sure the the answer is. The previous post pointed out some things I feel shouldn't have made it past QA. And I am colour blind which may not help ... have a lot of trouble with the colours of led's on dilberts in particular. Answer the rendering may look better on different screens/browsers etc.

But I use this page a lot directing people to certications and exams.

( I just had a look at all certifications page .... Ithink I gave up on that some time ago ... half the time the certifications begin Oracle Certified Professional WhateverCertification ... and the other half they they go WhateverCertifcation Oracle Certified specialist). It all looks half baked and gives less authority and confidence. All IMHO.

... At least I can still search for exam codes by w.g. CTRL-F on my firefox browser if I have to.

    Ok ...

    The
<!-- OU HOME PAGE MAIN CONTAINER AREA -- STARTS -->
Issue disappears on a more recent version of firefox.

Actually the indicators are the Oracle Certification Team do listen. Brandye has already commented on this thread. There are numerous examples on this forum of Brandye listening and acting on information on it. The Team no doubt has a lot of other inputs as well ... website developers, oracle upstream management and directives, costs, profits, Pearson VUE, exam developers .... and they will need to prioritize such inputs. And there is no doubt certification exams are used to incentivise candidates into learning and using new features and technologies and this may eventually feedback into increased profits/sales.
and Its nothing much we can do but live with it and yes ctrl+F is there to help but navigating is surely a problem for a new visitor :/
It probably doesn;t tend to be so bad. But where I previously might have directed someone to the all exams page and told them to look up 1z0-999 I know probably wouldn't do so as that form of lookup isn't available. ( In fact I am not sure there is any method on the certification website for simply looking up any exam code ..... the two method's I would use are to use ctrl-F on the all exam page or to get to the exam page for any exam then change the last three digits of the URL to the exam page I wanted .... in practice the latter method is the one I usually use when I know the exam code ).
    Sigh
The sky is blue for me.

Just a note on this - it is not likely that this page will be updated in the very near future since it was so recently updated, but I have passed along comments to the designers to consider for the next update project.

We do appreciate all feedback and I do route it to the right people. Comments/feedback don't always result in immediate or direct action, but it definitely gives us another (much appreciated) point of view - it shows us how our customers search in this case.

Please always feel free to provide thoughtful, candid feedback.

    Thanks,

Thanks for feedback ... initially i think i was particularly upset by a bug in an old browser version i was using ... then i started to examine the page and function in more detail; and i've tried to provide fedback as I've thought about how I was trying to use it. I may not be typical as I use it more than the average user, and in a different way, and also I am really a luddite from the punch card era; so my comments cannot be taken on their own but need to be compared carefully. ( Mind you I have also been complaining about the cloud.oracle.com homepage so I have done enough of that sort of thing for a week).
