Doesn't look to me like junk ... looks like a character set issue. Run this query and post the results:
I doubt what you see as a "-" is really what you think it is.
SELECT dump(<column_name>) FROM <your_table>;
Include also your full version number and database NLS character set.
You may get this because you have a wrong NLS_LANG setting on the client: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/globalization/nls-lang-099431.html#_Toc110410564.
To make sure you have correct character code point stored in database use SQL DUMP function: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/globalization/nls-lang-099431.html#_Toc110410561.

did you check OS Language Settings , Did you check character supported

Pl post exact OS and database versions, along with the database characterset, and exactly how (what tool etc) you are inserting this data into the database.
