What you see as /dev/shm is not a temporary file. It is POSIX shared memory that is used, e.g. by Oracle database using AMM (Automatic Shared Memory). It is not occuping any disk space and allocated from RAM as needed. The max. size is 50 % of physcial RAM by default.

    thanks dude...
is there something that can be done to get rid of the "Low space" issue

    h3. /dev/mapper/vg_srvai-lv_home 238G 226G 8.0K _100%_ /home

How have to examine home ?

    - Is there housekeeping that may be done?
    - if not is there room to expand it ? (pvs) { even if there is you may not want to }
    - Can you move /home or bits of /home elsewhere?

You need to identify what is causing your space shortage in /home (eg unmaintained temportary/log files) and that will help you plan a suitable way forward.

Sure, you have various options but what is your question here?

Do you want to know how to enlarge /home or how to find out what is eating all the space?

I suggest to search in Google for such common topics, for instance search for:

    "linux increase /home"
    "linux find large files"
"linux what is using all space"

You will find plenty of useful information.

Just to say I would be nervous about running this on a commercial system ... it might remove files that are actually needed!

.... Many an Oracle database administrator has had a bad day when an over zealous system administrator has truncated his redo logs!

But if it worked for your case ... great ..... but i would be loath recommend it blindfold in every case.

    Yep.
Prior to 10g, oracle's default naming for redo logs was 'redo1.rdo'. With 10g they changed that to 'redo1.log', and that's when people started getting trashed by clueless SA's. The first time it happened to me I went back and renamed all my redo logs back to 'rdo' and continue to this day.

It still doesn't guarantee your redos won't get trashed, but at least it removes the temptation to regain space by getting rid of a bunch of 'log' files. And if an SA still removes them, he's going to have to come up with a better story ...

What I do find what is using the space is..

    cd /home

    du -sk * | sort -n

and look at the bottom, if the bottom is a directory, then continue.. cd into that directory and again do du -sk * | sort -n

you will find what it's consuming the space.

    I've tried
    find /home -type f  -size +10000k -exec ls -lh {} \; | awk '{print $5 ": " $NF}'
and Identified this file is occupying all the space
    219G: /home/lt/.xsession-errors.old

Well Well ..... /home/lt is likely to be owned by someone with the initials LT ,, ;-)

    It's obviously the a file/directory containing the errors from an x-window session(s).

IMHO Determine what errors are for reference ... delete ... and then watch for re-occurance.

    You've probablly done this already .. ... ...
