Mainframe connect to Oracle in UNIX (outside box)

    986021
We are in the process of migration Mainframe COBOL/IMS database to COBOL/Oracle. We will be connecting to Oracle instance outside of mainframe instead of IMS from the COBOL programs.

1.Is there are any performance degradation when a mainframe BATCH (COBOL) or CICS transaction is trying to connect to ORACLE in UNIX outside box.

      2. Are there any performance bottleneck

      3. Any benchmark studies that was done incomparison to mainframe cobol/vsam workload

      3. What could be some of the forseeable challenges and tunings that we need to do apart from application.

      Any thoughts/ideas?

We are on z/OS 1.11 and the method of connectivity is "Access manager for CICS". Our Orcle client is 10.2.0.3 with patchset B9352195.
Make sure you install this patchset otherwise you might get some intermittent connectivity problem. Otherwise we dont have any issues.

How was the performance in comparison. Reason why I am asking we did a POC and we saw huge difference in performance. We are using ORACLE 9i.

Like, an input with 1 million records that reads a VSAM file and does some processing being change to go to ORACLE database. The logic is pretty simple trying to access each record from the oracle Db as the existing program is doing. Oracle DBA has also confirmed the query is using the required indexes

            Stats
            ===
Mainframe using VSAM to process 1 Million - 2.5 Elapsed Minutes, .30 CPU secs

Mainframe using VSAM to process 1 Million - 150 ElapsedMinutes, 25 CPU minutes.

            1. Did you experience any network latency issues
            2. Do I need to check the mainframe SRVCLASS priorities
            3. Any specific strategy to followed (Partioning, caching etc).

No we do not experience any network latecy issues. You can definitely take a look in srvcalss. our batchload runs with highest priority and process tons of millions of rows.
Even if the indexes are being used, but could be the woring indexes. Your DBA can find exactly by looking at the explain.
