    Buying an OS that is not documented & that you have no knowledge seems sub-optimal to me;
    considering that Oracle Linux is free & well documented.

    Before you actually start installing, its always better to follow the installation manual, so so that you know what steps are required, some cases even specific setup. There are few steps mentioned in the guide for SUSE only.

    I am just new to this company so I have to adopt what they have been using :(
    Well I have been using OEL but I did not know it is free? :)
    But I think SLES is free too? If you do not get support. Or only use google for support.

    Thanks yoonus...

    Yesss! this is the one I wanted :)
    What is the difference of the 2 links?

    By the way, do you have checklist too for all the drivers needed in installing SLES in a laptop?

    Hi again all,

    based on the docs
    The following or later version of packages for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 should be installed:

    binutils-2.19
    gcc-4.3
    gcc-c++-4.3
    glibc-2.9
    glibc-devel-2.9
    ksh-93t
    libstdc++33-3.3.3
    libstdc++43-4.3.3_20081022
    libstdc++43-devel-4.3.3_20081022
    libaio-0.3.104
    libaio-devel-0.3.104
    libgcc43-4.3.3_20081022
    libstdc++-devel-4.3
    make-3.81
    sysstat-8.1.5
    I tried installing these rpms and they showed
    ######## [100%]

    But if I query them it says "not yet installed" :( grrrrr

    Please help....

    Thanks

    Links are from same guide, just want to show that oracle do have a list of packages which you were asking in your post, thats the reason i posted the link which will directly take you to the list of packages

    There is a section "2 Logging In to the System as root" in the guide which talks about display

    Follow the documents and do the steps as per the guide, if you get errors post the error someone will help you.

    But you have to start following the installation guide for sure ;)

    How are you querying the packages?

    like this
    rpm -q binutils-2.19
    Try
    rpm -q <package_name> - this the way you query for a package

    rpm -q binutils

    or

    rpm -qa | grep binutils

    Thanks yoonus,

    I tried that
    # rpm -ivh gcc-4.3-62.198.src.rpm
       1:gcc                    ########################################### [100%]
    # rpm -qa|grep gcc-4.3
    (nothing displayed)
    #
    # rpm -q gcc-4.3-62.198
    package gcc-4.3-62.198 is not installed
    #
    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Don't mention the version while querying package, 'cause you could have another version, use this comand like this: rpm -q gcc

    Are you installing the rpms from installation media?

    you are installing source package gcc-4.3-62.198.src.rpm you will have to install gcc-4.3-62.198.rpm

    http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora_Draft_Documentation/0.1/html/RPM_Guide/ch-rpm-overview.html#id391194
    http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/s1-rpm-miscellania-srpms.html

    search in your installation media for gcc-4 install it not src.rpms

    Ok thanks :)

    I was looking at the 2nd DVD, when It is just all in the 1st DVD of Suse Installer. What is the purpose of the 2nd DVD? There are lots of RPMs there too.

    Ofcourse , there is going to be some information in the dvd you have. May be a readme file or installation guide that will tell you what exactly both dvd contain.
    or you can check with suse support or suse forum
