High Physical Memory Usage (32bit to 64bit migration)

    merp
      Hi,

Recently i migrated oracle 10.2.0.4 32bit to 10.2.0.4 64bit windows environment using rman backup and restore to the new environment. After completing everything the physical memory usage is 6GB out of total 8GB. Previously when i was running on 32bit environment, max utilization was only 3gb. No changes has been made to the parameters. Can some advise why is the server using up to 6GB now?? This server has only database running. Thanks in advance

          Hi,

Memory has been used on oracle.exe how much?
          Deference between 32bit oracle.exe and 64bit oracle.exe ?

          Regards,

No sane operating system will leave RAM unused - unless there is nothing to use it for.

most likely the extra memory is being used for file caching.

In 64-bit OSes the same data occupies more space in memory (due to swollen pointers and possibly other types and alignment padding). This means that storing the locations of data in memory takes more memory itself. This increases the memory requirements of a given process and can have implications for efficient processor cache utilization.

true, but it will not double the mem requirement from 3 to 6G.

the OP should clairfy -what- it is that is using the memory :)

That is correct. That was just a reason why 64-bit OS uses more memory. There could be several otehr software running. I have seen Radmin tool grabbing lot more memory than normal. Any 32-bit software on 64-bit OS will grab lot more extra memory.

oracle.exe is uin 64bit is utilizing around 1.28GB.. it was around the same for 32bit as well.

32-bit windows can NOT exceed 3GB since it is limited to 32-bits.

                        2 ^32^ = 4GB as unsigned integer

In that case, i have actually migrated 2 servers to 64bit environment. Both has more or less the same parameter values. The other environment is only utilizing average 3.3GB after migrating to 64bit.. but this DB is utilizing up to 6GB

One one most you said it is oracle.exe is using 1.28 GB and in other post you said DB is using 6 GB. Is it Database itself taking 6 GB of memory OR it's the database server(OS) taking 6 GB of memory. Also check in the task manager which process is taking all the memory? Let us know.
