Thanks for the references, but no, i still do not see what is different that is causing this issue. I am not able to point to where I need to make a change for this to work.
Any help is appreciated.
Would you provide a sample on apex.oracle.com

Can one of you please help me with this?
We are using Apex 4.0, and I want to call a fucntion called show() that woudl show an item P1_IS_PL_2 when a button is clicked.
HTML header of page:
</tt> tags as described in the FAQ.
That's all pretty obsolete in APEX 4.0. Hiding and showing items can easily be implemented using Dynamic Actions without writing any code.
The item I want to show is P1_IS_PL_2. It is currently a hidden item. When you say "a hidden item", do you mean that the Display As property in the item Definition is set to <b>Hidden</b>? If so, then that's your problem. Such items are rendered as <tt><input type="hidden" ...></tt> in HTML. Hidden <tt>input</tt> controls have no default user interface and are intended to be permanently unseen; they are used to store values that are invisible to the user.
Set the P1_IS_PL_2 item's Display As property to Text Field, and call the <tt>hide()</tt> function in the Execute when Page Loads page property to hide it on page load.
However, I still think you'd be better off scrapping this outmoded JS and using Dynamic Actions...
