Junk characters while using UNISTR function

Hi,

We are on Oracle 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10. I am trying to understand what UNISTR function does and in the process I was referring to Oracle documentation and seeing its example. When I run that example in my sqlplus screen I am getting junk characters as output , whereas that is the not so in the documentation. This sql query is as below:
--in Documentation:

SELECT UNISTR('abc\00e5\00f1\00f6') FROM DUAL;

UNISTR
------
abcåñö

-- Now when I run from my putty screen, connecting as sqlplus, I get this:

SQL> SELECT UNISTR('abc\00e5\00f1\00f6') FROM DUAL;

UNISTR('ABC\00E5\00F1\00F6')
--------------------------------
abc??o
Can someone please suggest on what am I doing wrong or if I need to do some setting for it.

Thanks,
OrauserN
