There are several bugs fixed in 10.2.0.5 which may account for it :
6967455 RMAN BACKUP DATAFILE can be slow
7119336 RMAN Backup of backupset does not parallelize in multiple channels
7173341 RMAN internal cleanup may be slow

In 11g manual, Unused Block Compression is turned on automatically when all of the following five conditions are true:

It may not matter...
But why the size differs? 590gb to 220gb

It's harder to track that one down. But it must have been a bug in the older version of Oracle. I think the feature statement was :
In Oracle 10g Release 2 RMAN does not backup unused blocks (empty blocks below the High watermark).
