    Unable so start 11G instance

    967473
      Hi all,
I just installed Oracle version 11.1.0.6 on an older CentOS server (kernel 2.6.9-78.0.1.ELsmp). I made it through the install with no problems, but was unable to start the instance. I received the error:

      SQL>startup mount
ORA-00845: MEMORY_TARGET not supported on this system

Hmm, weird I was able to install with no memory errors..

So I created a pfile from the spfile:
      strings spfile > pfile.ora

Edited the newpfile to lower the MEMORY_TARGET parameter, and now:

      SQL> create spfile from pfile='/usr/local/oracle/product/11.1.0.6/db_1/dbs/pfile.ora';
      create spfile from pfile='/usr/local/oracle/product/11.1.0.6/db_1/dbs/pfile.ora'
      *
      ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
ORA-32003: error occured processing parameter 'processes'

      My spfile is now gone!!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

For starters stop doing things when you don't know what the result is going to be.

The exception says 'MEMORY_TARGET not supported'. It doesn't say the value is too large. So why did you 'lower the MEMORY_TARGET parameter'?

And if you have a PFILE why didn't you just try starting up the DB by using it? Why did you 'create spfile from pfile . . .'?

What is the point of creating an SPFILE from a PFILE if the PFILE is invalid?

You need to do things one step at a time. Where is your backup of the SPFILE? The first thing you should do after an install is take a backup and make a PFILE copy and a copy of the control files.

What type of memory management did you configure? What other configuration options did you choose?

                INTERESTING!

on *NIX the ORACLE_SID is CaseSenSitive; "TRITON" does not equal "triton"

what is the correct value for ORACLE_SID?

post content from "pfile.ora" from above.

post excerpt from alert logfile that shows from last successful startup to the present

I adjusted the MEMORY_TAREGT based on this:
                  "duplicate definition"
(And the size of /dev/shm needs to be greater than MEMORY_TARGET or MEMMORY_MAX_TARGET.)

                  df -h:
                  3.9G 2.4G 1.6G 61% /dev/shm

                  MEMORY_TARGET in spfile = 4177526784

I would like to create the spfile so I do not have to pass the pfile='pfile location':

                                    SQL> create spfile from pfile='/usr/local/oracle/product/11.1.0.6/db_1/dbs/pfile.ora';
                                    create spfile from pfile='/usr/local/oracle/product/11.1.0.6/db_1/dbs/pfile.ora'
                                    *
                                    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-32002: cannot create SPFILE already being used by the instance

                                    Thank you very much.
