Rac nodes are dns clients. Scan is dns name that is registered to 1 - 3 IPs.

No, the SCAN IPs are not statically registered in the DNS. Your cluster domain is a delegated sub-domain within the DNS, so the DNS knows that it must contact the GNS when asked to resolve the SCAN to IP addresses. It is the address of the GNS that is statically registered in the DNS, not the SCAN.

I am not clear about the details what you have given.

For example in the three node: rachost1(node1), rachost2(node2), rachost3(node3). If I want SCAN IP to be registered in DNS and my DNS server name is hostdomain

Do I need to add in hostdomain DNS server in the /etc/named.conf file

SCAN is nothing different than a normal host name resolution except that it's done for the oracle rac. Now, in your question, yes the scan VIPs would need to be configured under the zone that's going to be configured in the DNS with both the forward and reverse lookups. The scan VIP's would be required to be mentioned in case you are using DNS method to resolve the SCAN name. In the case of the GNS, you wouldn't be mentioning the SCAN VIP's in the DNS but the static VIP of the GNSD(Grid Naming Service Daemon). The SCAN ViPs and the Node VIPs would come from the DHCP which would be a must for the GNS. In that case, you won't be configuring the complete forward and reverse lookup rules but the "forward only" rule. In this case, you would need to configure the sub-domain that would be required to be mentioned in the "forward only" rule.

                      Hi user8934564,

                      DNS Server configuration in detail:
                      http://www.dbaspace.com/2012/04/08/linux-how-to-configure-the-dns-server-for-11gr2-scan-id-1107295-1/

                      DNS Client(All Nodes) configuration:
See 5 & 6th point in same link

Note: Maximum you can assign only 3 SCAN VIP even if you have more than 3 nodes+.

I am going to modify what Bala said:

It "should" be updated automatically. Follow the SCAN document I pointed it out. While well meaning "blogs" purport to have the answers, you still will want to get the SCAN document and follow it.

Please go through the following link. It provides detailed description of how to configure SCAN:

                              Hope it helps
