11i to R12 upgrade Filesystem requirement!!!

    860213
      Hello,

I am currently in preperation phase of upgrading 11i to R12 with 10g to 11g db upgrade, my OS is solaris 10, 2 node arch, Node1 :- Web Tier, Node 2:- CP and DB tier.

We have procured 2 new servers to host new enviornment, I am planning to first clone existing system on to new server and then do upgrade on new server thereby not touching existing 11i env.

As next step i need to provide filesystem requirement for R12 system, i have finalized below, can you please validate:-
Filesystem Name     Storage(GB)     Purpose     Type     Comments
      DB Server
/u02/PROD/appl     20     11i Appl Top     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/comn     40     11i Comn Top     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/ora/8.0.6     6     11i Tools home     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/ora/iAS     5     11i Web Oracle home     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/db/10.2     20     11i database home      Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
      /u01/PROD/data     200     11i database file(current size is 100 GB)
/u01/PROD/arch     1     11i database archive      Permanent     This filesystem will be reused for R12
/u01/PROD/redo     1     11i database redo     Permanent     This filesystem will be reused for R12
/u02/PROD/admin     10     11i database admin     Permanent     This filesystem will be reused for R12
      /u02/PROD/apps/apps_st/appl     30 R12 APPL_TOP     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
      /u02/PROD/apps/apps_st/comn     50 R12 COMN_TOP     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
      /u02/PROD/apps/tech_st/10.1.2     15 R12 TOOLS Oracle Home     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
      /u02/PROD/apps/tech_st/10.1.3     15 R12 Web Oracle Home     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
/u02/PROD/db/11.1     10     Interim 11.1.0.7 Oracle Home     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
      /u02/PROD/db/11.2     10     Final 11.2.0.3 Oracle Home     Permanent     R12 Filesystem

      Application Server
/u02/PROD/appl     30     11i Appl Top     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/comn     8     11i comn Top     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/ora/8.0.6     10     11i Tools Home     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
/u02/PROD/ora/iAS     10     11i iAS Home     Temporary     This filesystem will not be required after upgrade
      /u02/PROD/apps/apps_st/appl     30     R12 APPL_TOP     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
      /u02/PROD/apps/apps_st/comn     15     R12 COMN_TOP     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
      /u02/PROD/apps/tech_st/10.1.2     15     R12 Tool Oracle Home     Permanent     R12 Filesystem
      /u02/PROD/apps/tech_st/10.1.3     15     R12 Web Oracle Home     Permanent     R12 Filesystem

11i filesystem is as per current size of prod env and i have tried to match R12 with current 11i +20% i.e. /u02/PROD/apps/apps_st/appl space requirement is equal to or greater then /u02/PROD/appl and similar.

      Thanks,
      JD

Your Filesystem looks fine to me and all you have above are OK. I just have a small connect about the CP, any reason you are keeping in on the DB node rather than the application tier (Node 1)? Rather than having the application tier filesystem on two nodes, it would be easier to move the CP to Node 1 and have one application tier file system node (assuming you have sufficient resources).

          Thanks,
          Hussein

Reason for having DB and CP on same tier is to minimize I/O performance issues between CP and DB tier while running long batch jobs.

              hi Hussien,
We are in process of upgrading our 11i EBS to R12 and simultaneously migrating from HP-UX to Oracle Linux with OVM

On new server, we installed OVM server and created two virtual machines. Please advise if there will be any performance benefit of hosting Concurrent managers on same VM where Database is hosted ? This is in relevance to recommendation by Oracle to host CM with DB together if we have two seperate physical boxes.

In other words, the recommended installation is :
              Node1: "DB and CP"
              Node2: Froms/web

But in case of virtualization, does it really matter as far as performance is concerned if we install following way:
              Node1: "DB”
              Node2: Froms/web/CP

              thanks,
              Anand

I would go for Option 2. Because DB and CP takes a lot of resources compared to forms and web. So it will be like putting a lot of load on one server and not much on the other server.

As per oracle, If the netwrok connection is good then we can keep Db services and CP services on two different servers. As CP services communicates a lot to the DB service.

                Thanks

Thanks. And Option 2 is fine from managability perspective as well.
I hope there will be no issue on network side, as data will be transferred over virtual NICs?

Yes, there will not be any issues.
