Check out this blog post by Frank Nimphius: https://blogs.oracle.com/jdevotnharvest/entry/displaying_exceptions_thrown_or_catched
might be what you're looking for.
also, watch out the March/Apr edition of Oracle Magazine http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oramag/magazine/home/index.html
Its having an article I wrote about error handling in Oracle ADF including a sample of showing how it works. I know we have February and March is a few weeks to go.
No ... This is to report exception to ADF Model error Handler from managed Bean. Where as I am looking for is - how to customize the display for custom exception via ADF Model layer ?
You mean ... the upcoming edition.
Which version of JDeveloper are you using?

at HTML tags returned from DCErrorMessage.getHTMLText() shown on the page
It has details on how to get something as shown in the screenshot
Given the documentation you refer to, maybe also these are relevant:
- forum thread "multiple callbacks to DCErrorHandlerImpl",
at multiple callbacks to DCErrorHandlerImpl
- JIRA issue ADFEMG-76, "bug 11674731 : DCERRORHANDLERIMPL SUB-CLASS SUPER(TRUE) OR SUPER(FALSE)"
I am using Jdeveloper 188.8.131.52.0.
In my application, we are doing all updates and add operations through sql procedures which returns error or warning status with message and rulename that failed. I am throwing custom ValidatorJboException from my model for error and warning status on sql procedures call. Now I want to customize the framework in such a way that :
in case of error : user can see errors in table ( Message, Rule Name ) with Ok button. And transaction should rollback on OK press.
in case of warning : user can see errors in table ( Message, Rule Name ) with AcceptAndContinue and Cancel button. Transaction should commit in case of AcceptAndContinue and rollback in case of cancel.
I am having an additional property in my custom Exception to determine whether exception is because of error or warning.
Question : So as of now, I am looking for a way to customize the error display for custom exception. By default framework adds the facesMessage and displays that.
Maybe the blog post "Get More From Your Messages" by Duncan Mills can help
