utf8 - solaris intel/amd

Hi guys

I apologize if my question is trivial, but I am out of ideas at this point.

I have a Solaris 10 Intel installation , full scale one
The installation has been configured UTF8

Now I have this character

'ä'

But when I paste it in vi I get

'C$'

Looks to me like it's octal representation

My terminal client is using UTF8 character encoding

-bash-3.00$ cat /etc/default/init
TZ=US/Central
CMASK=022
LANG=en_US.UTF-8

-bash-3.00$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

-bash-3.00$ locale -m
ja/charmap.src
ja_JP.PCK/charmap.src
ja_JP.eucJP/charmap.src
iso_8859_1/charmap.src

I also tried

uncompress /usr/lib/localedef/src/en_US.UTF-8/*Z followed by reboot to no avail

What am missing / doing wrong ?

Many thanks
AP
