When try to connect to Essbase via SmartView on my client p.c. I get the following message.
"Cannot connect to the provider because: Cannot connect to provider. The attempt to connect to the server failed. Make sure the server is running in the specified URL."
I am following the instructions from "SampleApp V207 - Virtual Machine Image Deployment Guide"; -
"Note: In order to use SmartView, first install Smartview client on your desktop. Then launch an Microsoft Office product like Excel. Create a Private Connection by providing the URL as http://localhost:13080/aps/SmartView Add the server name as obieesampleapp.us.oracle.com:1423. When prompted for credentials, enter admin/password"
In the above, where it cites; - http://localhost:13080/aps/SmartView - does it mean exactly that - as on my client p.c. (not inside the virtualbox as Excel does not work in the Linux environment) the localhost will be my p.c.'s IP address, not the virtualbox?!
Or is it telling me to try; -
http://obieesampleapp.us.oracle.com:1423:13080/aps/SmartView - which does not seem right either, I am assuming the obieesampleapp etc is what you select once you are connected to the server(?)
Can anyone advise - what localhost should substitute for in the above, how to find out what my VM Box is running as for SmartView?
You should be entering the host name (or possibly the ip depending on your network) of the Virtual Box if you are accessing from a client pc to the VM, make sure you can ping and telnet to the VM from your client pc.
following the advice from the VM document I use /sbin/ifconfig to get the following; -
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:86:51:5A
inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe86:515a/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:4103 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:58 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
RX bytes:373821 (365.0 KiB) TX bytes:10453 (10.2 KiB)
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:9964439 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:9964439 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
RX bytes:1686341122 (1.5 GiB) TX bytes:1686341122 (1.5 GiB)
the only thing in there that I recognise as an IP is 127.0.0.1 which I have tried for SmartView and does not work.
The document is pointing me at the inet address under eth0, but there the only address is inet6 and the ip there is unlike anything I have ever seen (fe80::a00:27ff:fe86:515a/64)
Can anyone advise and get me past this brick wall??
I am not sure how the VM has been configured but it is only showing a IPv6 address.
Can you ping the IPv6 address from the client pc
I try the link (with localhost) in the VM and I get a web page successfully; Hyperion Provider Services
The logs are 'clean'
I do have a firewall on my p.c. - and will try completely turning it off to trial (once I have disabled wifi et al) but can you advise what I would explicitly need to leave open in the firewall as I do not see provision to allow the VM program?
Hi again John,
I think I have found the IP address I was seeking in the VMBox, by running IPConfig on the client host.
What I see is; -
Ethernet adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::2d33:97d5:4635:ba1e%21
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
However, when I try the 192.168.56.1 on website or smartview add in I do not get a result...
Any thoughts, and thanks again for all your input - at the risk of being accused of bribery I will be liberally spreading 5 points against your posts after this....
