How to install ASM 11gR2 on Linux without RAC setup.

We want to use Oracle ASM but not RAC on our 11gR2 (Oracle 11.2.0.3) Linux server. We have downloaded 7 zip files for complete software (database, RAC, ASM) package.

What is the detailed procedure of install ASM only without the clusterware? Thanks!

          2. Install Asmlib packages and configure asm disks:

          in http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e22489/typinstl.htm#BABDDFIJ

go to "1.3.6 Prepare Storage for Oracle Automatic Storage Management"

          3. Install Grid infractructure from grid unzipped folder and choose "GI for Standalone Server"

          this will configure ASM

          4. Install database software from database unzipped folder, when creating database choose ASM for datafiles

              Use this guide:

Thanks for the information. Should I unzip the zip file 4,5,6,7? I think 1,2,3 is for database and 4,5,6,7 for grid infrastructure. When I run the install from grid, it asked for valid SCAN IP. In ASM install only, should we also make the server qualify for RAC setup? Is the clusterware grid setup the requirement for ASM?

                  No.

1 and 2 are the database
3 is the grid infrastructure (includes asm)
                  4 is the database client
                  5 is 'gateways'
                  6 is 'examples'
                  7 is 'deinstall'.

If you choose "Grid for standalone server", clusterware will be installed in minimal configuration to support ASM, without other RAC-specific options (SCAN, voting disks etc.)

One other note.. ASMLib is not "required" and going forward will only be supported on OEL. Not RH (at least that is the last update I got from my accounts Oracle support personnel). You will need to review how to configure multipathd and udev. Docs can be found on MOS.

Install Grid Control for Standalone ASM.

Thanks for the information everyone. We have decided to install and configure the server as single node RAC. Therefore we need to setup the server for the RAC qualification, like running the cluster verify process and setup SCAN IP.

But what about the user equivalency setup to pass the cluster verification, since this is the only node?

Does not matter how many nodes you have.. you must be able to connect locally without password. Installation process depend on this to work properly.
                          Issue:
                          $ ssh <node_name> date

                          e.g

                          node1@oracle> ssh node1 date
