Hi Guys,

how do you create a dump device in zfs ? How can you also delete that dump device? I have been studying but I do not understand it clearly. I get that of the swap volume for zfs. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks

Its pretty simple, but might be complicated by the fact that a ZFS dump volume is created during installation so
    you might already have one:

    # zfs list -t volume
    NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
    rpool/dump 1.00G 25.4G 1.00G -
    rpool/swap 2.06G 25.4G 2.00G -

    # dumpadm
    Dump content: kernel pages
    Dump device: /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/dump (dedicated)
    Savecore directory: /var/crash
    Savecore enabled: yes
    Save compressed: on

If the dump device is not in use then you can remove it and create a new one but it might take a while to
    allocate a large dump device.

I see a problem in current Solaris 10 releases, where the default dump device size is too small so check
Memory first and allocate a new volume that is at least half the size of physical memory.

    # prtconf -v | grep Mem
    Memory size: 8192 Megabytes
    # zfs get volsize rpool/dump
    NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE
    rpool/dump volsize 1G local

Create the new dump device first because the first rpool/dump is in use as the dump device:

    # zfs create -V 4g rpool/dump2

Add this device as the dump device:

    # dumpadm -d /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/dump2
    Dump content: kernel pages
    Dump device: /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/dump2 (dedicated)
    Savecore directory: /var/crash
    Savecore enabled: yes
    Save compressed: on

    Remove the old dump device.

    # zfs destroy rpool/dump
