I suggest you go ask your question to the manufacturer of your storage hardware and perhaps go ask your question at a MySQL forum for additional guidance.
This forum is for questions dealing with Sun-branded/Oracle-branded storage hardware and the administration of that hardware. It is not a generic storage forum.
I am - the it's an Oracle SAN and this is an oracle storage forum? Where else would I ask for manufacturer's recommendations?

Again, you posted to a HARDWARE forum.
Perhaps you should just log a SR with Technical Support, as per the advice here:

The SAN is a piece of hardware (Axiom Pillar 600)
I'm not an Oracle customer, as I've been asked to help with a customer's SQL implementation - generally I'm trying to follow industry best practice by following manufacturer guidelines...
Let's see if anyone familiar with the product sees your inquiry and then chooses to respond.
(In the mean time, the owner should log a support ticket since it seems that Oracle is now "the manufacturer" with whatever guidelines are current.)
I don't know much about the pillar arrays but the storagetek arrays hat similarly stupid "presets" for their storage profiles. I would not spend too much time thinking about that stuff and create volumes the way you think is smartest (which does not include a lot of raid 5). Or do it properly, try both ways and benchmark.
