installed oel 6.3 setup network connectivity, can ping server, and can make an exceed connection.. cannot connect to the internet, these are the ifcfg-em1
the problem appears to be that the resolv.conf file wasn't being used to resolve the dns name, i had to change the ifcfg-em1 file and put the dns entries there and the domain entry. this must be a change from oel5.8 where the dns entries were only required in the resolv.conf file
To make a DNS entry in the ifcfg-ethx file also exists under 5.8.
The DNS entry in the efcfg-ethx file is a name server address (TCP/IP address) to be placed in /etc/resolv.conf if the PEERDNS directive is set to yes. If using DHCP, then the PEERDNS directive is set to yes by default and updating your /etc/resolv.conf file accordingly.
It is possible that your initial /etc/resolv.conf file was incorrectly configured or had some format issue and therefore DNS services were not working.
