runInstaller returns error

I am attempting to install Oracle Client 11g on a new RedHat Linux O/S. I have read several posts related to the error I am receiving and have attempted to apply know solutions to no avail including issuing "xhost +" and setting the DISPLAY variable to <localhost>:0.0. Here is the error I am receiving and cannot get past:

Checking monitor: must be configured to display at least 256 colors Failed <<<<
>>> Could not execute auto check for display colors using command /usr/bin/xdpyinfo. Check if the DISPLAY variable is set.

Open to ideas ...

Thanks.

I recommend to forget about the xhost utility and setting the DISPLAY variable.

Assuming you are using the server console and have a graphical desktop interface, simply open a Terminal and type:
    ssh -X oracle@localhost
then use the Oracle runInstaller and it should work.
