Sun Secure Global Desktop broken in 1.6.0_45/1.7.0_21

Hoping for some guidance - something fundamental must have changed in the latest Java 6 & 7 releases because our login screen in the Sun Secure Global Desktop application is no longer able to display. This is from the end of the trace log:
      network: Connecting https://<ourURL.com>:443 with proxy=DIRECT
      basic: Starting applet teardown
      basic: Finished applet teardown
      basic: Starting applet teardown
      basic: Finished applet teardown
basic: JVM[id=0]-Heartbeat heartbeat dead, exception. dT=0 seconds.
      java.lang.InterruptedException
      at java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method)
      at sun.plugin2.message.Queue.waitForMessage(Unknown Source)
      at sun.plugin2.message.Pipe.receive(Unknown Source)
      at sun.plugin2.main.server.HeartbeatThread.run(Unknown Source)

Any clues on what that could mean, and are there any properties or other files I could edit to fix? I see a lot of posts here about an application called LiveConnect also being broken under latest JRE... Wondering if issues are related.
