    I see what you both mean - I need a generic/admin account in order to bind, then I can use search_s to get the full DN for my user and use that to authenticate.

    If I try a search_s after
    retval := dbms_ldap.simple_bind_s(my_session, null, null);
    even though the retval is zero, when I execute the search_s afterwards, I get:
    ORA-31202: DBMS_LDAP: LDAP client/server error: Operations error. 00000000: LdapErr: DSID-0C090627, comment: In order to perform this operation a successful bind must be completed on the connection., data 0, vece

    I'll have to see if there is an account I can use for the first bind. Many thanks for your help.

    regards,
    Malcolm.

    Closing.

    I had to do a workaround in the end: store the full DN string of the user in a new table with the username, and pass that into a custom LDAP function.
