ASM & single instance

Hello

ASM is usually used with RAC. Is ASM actually recommended for a single-instance (non-RAC)?

Thanks

    Hi,

Oracle Recommended, use ASM for store your database files and you can use ASM for RAC and Single Instance Databases.

Yes, you can use ASM for Single Instance databases as well.

Whether you choose to use ASM will depend on your DBA team's skill level, storage administration policies etc

    Hi,

ASM features are not dependent on single Instance or RAC environment, You can also use ASM for single Instance for example let's say RAID is not implemented at storage level or probably its a JBOD storage, we can use ASM to stripe the data at diskgroup level for balancing I/O contention and can also use NORMAL redundancy diskgroup for data availability in case of disk faulty. From 11g onwards ASM has much broader scope like we have ACFS which can be use as normal general cluster file system to keep non-database files etc.

    Thanks

Simple, real world in my case, example of why ASM for a single instance. Small server. 3 SATA drives (e.g. 500GB and 2x1TB). 1st drive is the root drive (contains o/s and Oracle). 1TB drives as used as raw devices by ASM for a normal redundancy diskgroup (effectively providing a mirrored diskgroup for the database).

I have currently 3 such configurations/servers installed for a colleague.

ASM does not (only) make sense for RAC. It makes sense as Storage Manager for an Oracle database. Any Oracle database. Single. Or RAC. (the exception being Oracle XE as as XE does not include ASM as a freeware option).

Billy, just make sure you never go over 50% utilization on a 2-device system. If you lose a disk ASM is going to have a lot of fun getting ASM to provide mirrored blocks on the other remaining device.

Hmm... something that I now must try to see just how bad it actually is. Now to find a spare server to abuse... :-)

    Thanks.
