If you want to migrate an operating system from physical installation to use it with OVM, so :
- verify that the source and distination have the same CPU family/Type.
- you can use the P2V to convert the Oracle E-business suite from IBM Power 5 AIX 6.1 to a Template
- Import this template with OVM Manager
I hope this can help you
Virtualization of course the trend in modern era, and I personally advice you to have a thorough testing on performance and specifically simulate workloads and check the behavior. I don't personally go on to support Virtualization on Production environment as it incurs additional cost like CPU usage, memory usage borrowed by other environment being virtualized. And as it does not directly work with the hardware. May be some will be against this point, but I see as if it incurs additional resources. Being said this, I am not completely against Virtualizationas long as it is not a heavy 24/7 environment. I would go on to support the ideology, saying it's best to choose the right technology to right environment.

It is a big jump from AIX to OVM. I suggest you have to careful on the following topics
- load testing before actual migration
- skill set, Linux is different than AIX, make you have people to manage it
- shell script customization need to be tested as Linux scripting is slightly different than AIX
We're just finished up our EBS 11i on 10gR2, all running on SPARC/Solaris to R12 on 11gR2 all running on OEL6 on top of OVM. Both the EBS and OVM pieces are extremely finicky, leading to a long and complicated migration process, but neither seems particularly impacted by the other.
Performance is great and the system is running in stability, as long as we don't look at the storage system sideways.
I've been living this migration for the last 18 months, so can probably answer more questions if you have detailed questions to ask.
I've been running 11.5.10 CU2 on OEL5.5 with about a 1 TB 126.96.36.199 2 node RAC DB.... on top pf OVM 3.1.1 for almost a year. Very satisfied. Very fast.Very stable. In the process of migrating to 12.1.3. We have test environments up and running without any issues. I'd say you're going to have more issues with the switch to OEL than with Oracle VM. Just run PVM guests. There are several support articles about running EBS on various editions of OEL. You'll have to run a couple down rev rpms and etc.... but OEL is rock solid. Much faster/stable than anything I've run Oracle software on. I prefer OEL5 but EBS is now supported on OEL6. There just a few things I don't particularly like about OEL6.
Like Rob said, You might have issues with storage. Seems like most of the complaints I've heard about OVM is due to storage issues. I run Oracle hardware with ZFS storage and haven't had any issues.
Hi Rob and user12273962
Thank you so much for the replies, i am now pretty confident that it will work, we are still waiting for the hardware to be shipped most probably end of July, meantime i will try to complete my documentation part, also i will make sure there are no surprises with storage configurations with OVM
Can you guys please drop me an email on firstname.lastname@example.org, so if there are any issue i can get in contact with you guys
thank you once again
