how to create a database link to connect to Progress

    myluism

      Hi all.

I have a 10G database (10.2.0.4) running on a Linux box and like to connect to a Progress DB 9.x.

The idea could be the creation of an Oracle database procedure which would access the Progress Database and pull some data back to Oracle.

A database link could be the answer i guess....

Please provide feedback, examples to get me started.

      Best regards, Luis

          Hi Luis,

You can use the 11g Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) to connect from Oracle 10.2.0.4 to Postgres. We have many customers using that combination.

If you have access to My Oracle Support you should review these notes -

Master Note for Oracle Gateway Products (Doc ID 1083703.1)

How to Configure DG4ODBC on 64bit Unix OS (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX Itanium) to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 561033.1)

You can download the latest DG4ODBC 11.2.0.3 version as -

Patch 10404530: 11.2.0.3.0 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATABASE SERVER

from My Oracle Support and install it standalone in a separate ORACLE_HOME from the 10.2 RDBMS install.
For the gateway software you only need to download -

            Hi Mike.

I have found the information provided very useful, though i have a couple of questions:

            - The patch 10404530 is for Oracle 11G (11.2.0.3).

            - Is this to be installed as a standalone product? I mean, can i install in an empty directory?.

            - Can i download the windows version, to use in my laptop and later, connect to a dabatabse on a Linux system?.

            Regards, Luis .

              Hi Luis,

Yes, you should use the 11.2 gateway and install it standalone in a completely different ORACLE_HOME from any existing installs.  The 10.2 gateways have been desupported for some time and the 11.2.0.3 gateway is certified with the 10.2.0.4 RDBMS.

And yes, you can download the Windows software and use it to access a database on a Linux system. Obviousy, the laptop needs a network connection to whichever other machines you wish to access.
For Windows 32-bit the download you need is -

              p10404530_112030_platform_4of6.zip

              The download -

              p10404530_112030_platform_5of7.zip

              is for all other platforms.

              Regards,

              Mike
