    VNC on Oracle Linux 6.3

    Jimbo

      Hi,

      I have just installed Oracle Linux 6.3 and I have noticed there is vncserver located in /usr/bin.

      So I start the vncserver using

      cd /usr/bin

      ./vncserver

      I am prompted for a password, which I supply. An authority file /root/.Xauthority is created

      A new desktop is created ( lab1.nms:1 )

      A default startup script /root/.vnc/xstarup is created and the application is started

      On my server I can now see the vncserver processes

      root      2501     1  0 15:19 pts/1    00:00:00 ./Xvnc :1 -desktop lab1.nms:1 (root) -auth /root/.Xauthority -geometry 1024x768 -rfbwait 30000 -rfbauth /root/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5901 -fp catalogue:/etc/X11/fontpath.d –pn

      However when I launch my VNC viewer ( Real VNC 5.0.3 for Windows ) on my remot windows client and provide the connection as lab1.nms:1 ( which is in my local hosts file on my remote client ) I simply get a timeout

      There is no firewall between my client and server ( I am able to ssh, sftp, ping etc )

      Any ideas of what is wrong ? Do I need to do some further config in VNC ?

      Jim

          Add /etc/hosts entries in the following format - IP    FQDN   hostname

          Edit /etc/sysconfig/vncservers as follows:

               VNCSERVERS="1:<username>"

               VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 1280x1024"

          # server vncserver start

          # server iptables stop

          # chkconfig iptables off

          # chkconfig vncserver on

          Login to your VNC server as xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1
