    Hi,

It is giving me error - Invalid User-name/password. Login denied.

Issue is with your credentials as the error suggest.

But as a work around do this:

    - sqlplus / as sysdba

    - alter user <username> identified by <new password for the user>

NOTE: alter user... command is to set a new password for the user whom you have forgotten the password.

    Hope this helps!

    Best Regards

    Hi,

Did you created a database during the oracle installation?

If yes, did you tried to check the CASPLOCK? Oracle 11g is case sensitive.

What command line are you attempting to connect by sqlplus?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

I installed the oracle-xe using below procedure: I kept HHTP port as 8080 and database listener as 1521. I gave the password - sysadmin

    [root@localhost Disk1]# rpm -ivh oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm
    Preparing...                          ################################# [100%]
    Updating / installing...
       1:oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0             ################################# [100%]
    Executing post-install steps...
You must run '/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure' as the root user to configure the database.

    [root@localhost Disk1]# /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure

Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Configuration
    -------------------------------------------------
This will configure on-boot properties of Oracle Database 11g Express
Edition.  The following questions will determine whether the database should
be starting upon system boot, the ports it will use, and the passwords that
will be used for database accounts.  Press <Enter> to accept the defaults.
    Ctrl-C will abort.

Specify the HTTP port that will be used for Oracle Application Express [8080]:

Specify a port that will be used for the database listener [1521]:

Specify a password to be used for database accounts.  Note that the same
password will be used for SYS and SYSTEM.  Oracle recommends the use of
different passwords for each database account.  This can be done after
    initial configuration:
    Confirm the password:

Do you want Oracle Database 11g Express Edition to be started on boot (y/n) [y]:y

    Starting Oracle Net Listener...Done
    Configuring database...Done
Starting Oracle Database 11g Express Edition instance...Done
    Installation completed successfully.

After this i tried executing below in sql plus:

    - sqlplus / as sysdba

    - alter user <username> identified by <new password for the user>

Use "connect username/password@XE" to connect to the database.
    SQL> connect
    Enter user-name: system
    Enter password:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

    SQL> connect /as sysdba
    ERROR:

Please let me know whether some permissions or configurations needs to be done with my Fedora18 or oracle.

    type

    ps -ef | grep pmon

In your OS, this will show us if the database is up and who is the database owner.

Try to connect on your database using a browser by the address http://localhost:8180/apex and check if it will ask to you the username and password.

When you ran the command below  ...

    SQL> connect /as sysdba

    ERROR:

    ORA-01031: insufficient privileges,

Do you check your sqlnet.ora ? In many situations your should change the NTS to NONE or NONE to NTS. Beside that, you can check the privilegies in this OS, if the group dba is correct with the user you are. Is he the user Oracle?

If you can't connect via the system user, use sys as sysdba or /as sysdba, the slash in place of a username means "use OS authentication".

The caveat, if your user ID is not in the dba group, OS authentication for sysdba will not work. So either:

    1. set a password for the oracle user and login as oracle (or use an su - oracle to get an oracle shell)
    2. add your user to the dba group

After getting a sysdba, or a system connection, you can set the password for any database user. One of the few things system can not do is shutdown the instance.

      sqlplus /nolog

      conn /as sysdba;

      ... connected ...

      alter user system identified by <new password>;

      conn system

      ... password ... connected ...
