OK, I have created (on standby) listener.ora file with contest as follows:

          (SID_LIST =

            (SID_DESC =

              (GLOBAL_DBNAME = primdb1)

              (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11gR2/dbhome_1)

              (SID_NAME = primdb1)

        LISTENER =

            (DESCRIPTION =

              (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = = 1521))

            (DESCRIPTION =

              (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))

        ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /u01/app/oracle

        [oracle@rh1 dbhome_1]$ bin/lsnrctl start

        Service "primdb1" has 1 instance(s).

Instance "primdb1", status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service...

        The command completed successfully

Something is wrong, I guess. Is my listener.ora file correct?

        • 16. Re: [DataGuard][Error 12514]  Error received logging on to the standby

Would expect the GLOBAL_DBNAME to be:

          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = primdb1_DGMGRL.your.host.com)

          Might add :

As a new line under ADR_BASE_LISTENER

Make sure you restart the listener.

            (GLOBAL_DBNAME = primdb1_DGMGRL.your.host.com)

I don't get the .your.host.com. Do I need to add there an ip address of my primary db server or I have to add to my primary db server  /etc/hosts and then replace .your.host.com with name I have specified for my primdb server in /etc/hosts/?

And could you explain why do I need to add 'DGMGRL' after SID of my primary db?

            • 18. Re: [DataGuard][Error 12514]  Error received logging on to the standby

I always use DNS instead of IP address. But the /etc/hosts should cover you as well.

DGMGRL is an entry for Data Guard Broker. You may not use it, but by adding it now you don't have to change the listener again. Mostly your listener looks like it should fly.

I assume the standby is already in MOUNT.

Until you can do the following:

sqlplus sys/pass@Standby as sysdba (from the primary system)

sqlplus sys/pass@primary as sysdba (from the standby system)

You will not be able to ship redo.

              Best Regards

What name should have the password file on standby server?

On standby and primary server ORACLE_SID=primdb1. The db_unique_name=stbydb1 for standby and db_unique_name=primdb1 for primary.

                orapwd file=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/orapwd<ORACLE_SID>.ora password=<password> entries=<maximum number of distict DBA>

Therefor for primary it would be,

                orapwd file=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/orapwprimdb1.ora password=<intended password> entries=10 (example)

Once created, copy the file to standby server to $ORACLE_HOME/dbs location of standby database and rename the file as orapwstbydb1.ora

                • 20. Re: [DataGuard][Error 12514]  Error received logging on to the standby

Solved. I'm ashamed of the fact that the only issue was with the name of password file. I have used password file naming for Windows while working on Linux. The file listener.ora was unnecessary.

                  Thank you, Abufazal.
