We are looking to develop OEM plugin and I have following queries:
- Can i have "a" plugin to monitor/ manager both server and storage?
- Related to the first question only, can i have "a" plugin to monitor/ manage different storage (eg EMC Clariion & EMC Celerra)? Currently i understand there are 2 separate plugin for EMC Clariion & EMC Celerra but just want to understand whether there could be 1 plugin to monitor/ manage 2 different storage models.
- If no, is this a technical constraint or more of a "policy" thing?
A Oracle EM plugin developed with the Oracle EM12c EDK can monitor and manage any combination of technologies you wish. There are no technical restraints.
You can monitor multiple technologies (OS, Apps, Storage, Hardware, etc) using your own custom code within the plug-in as well as mix and match information you want to collect from your custom app along with information that other Oracle and 3rd party plugins (Examples: the EMC plugins, the VMware plug-in, etc) and then mash it up in your custom EM based UI screens. An example of this approach can be found here where VMware information collected by the Blue Medora VMware plugin and the Oracle's Oracle Database plugin are pulled together in a single dashboard.
Another approach is simply to make the plugin you are developing <aware> of other related plugins within the environment. In other words, if you are able to detect the host your custom app is running on you can provide UI links to Oracle's OMA Host target so that your customers can easily drill down from your app to other relevant aspects of the system.
This ability to pull different domains together (in addition to specific custom app/technology you wish to manage) extends beyond monitoring -- you can execute EM12c based jobs and procedures together within your plugin to chain together workflows that provide management capabilities as well. Finally, the ability to mash up data collected from different domains also extends to the reporting capabilities included with EM12c via Oracle BI Publisher.
If you have any questions regarding the development of Oracle EM12c plugins please feel free to send us a note -- we've developed 8 of them in the past 18 months and have teams working on a number of others at the moment.
