Yes indeed. Without archive logfiles, the engine can not do the required recovery to get the datafiles in sync for the instance.
The *only* time datafiles are consistent is when the database is shut down. If the instance is not running in archivelog mode, do a shutdown and copy the datafiles some place safe.
Preferably back up to a different disk drive. Why does one do backups? Because disk drives fail, that is one answer. And programmers and/or DBAs can also make data mistakes, another reason for needing backups.
