Hi, I have used oracle database for a while and am fine with creating and upgrading databases.
I have installed the software and set up a database on a solaris box. I now need to get a client set up in windows7 so I can access sql plus ,toad etc.
I am complete beginner on this and really struggling to find a guide to do this as different sites are saying different things.
Maybe its just me but I found the guide http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E36939_01/doc/doc.13/e36763/client.htm really confusing.
Can anyone give me some advise or point to a straight forward guide to help me? Do I need to install additional software on the solaris server aswell?
What you are referring to is
Oracle® R Enterprise Installation and Administration Guide
Release 1.3.1 for Windows, Linux, Solaris, and AIX
Part Number E36763-15
You should be rather looking at the instructions given here Contents
Thanks for your reply NC, however im still really struggling getting this installed (maybe its just me . )
It says download the client file and gives you a link to the main download page (not very helpful). The file im downloading is the instant client, windows 64 instant client package basic (the top one) for 11.2.
When this is downloaded and unzipped the documentation says I need to navigate to the client directory - but It doesn't exist.
Im really struggling with this as ive never installed any oracle product on windows before.
Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Srir, the guide im using is Installing Oracle Database Client and the file im downloading is on page Instant Client downloads for Microsoft Windows (x64) . The file is version 188.8.131.52.0 instant client package basic.
The windows version is a home version , windows 7 home premium , as this is purely testing
The guide you link to is for the full client install while the software link is for the instant client, which is a different beast. Install instructions for instant client are at the very bottom of the software link you provided
Home versions of Windows are not certified for any Oracle installs, so expect issues with either installing the software, or using the software, or both.
For using TOAD with Instant Client, see Toad for Oracle - Using Oracle Instant Client - YouTube
The "thing to run" is TOAD, your application - there is nothing to "run" in the Instant Client.
