    ntp error messages in syslog "Network is down"

    Bob Weinmann

      Created a new OL6 server running under OVM 3.1.1.  Server has been updated to latest levels from ULN.

      Configured NTP and it is functioning normally and is serving time to other hosts on the local network.

      However, it is generating errors in the syslog as follows.

      The server has full access to external public networks, and DNS is working.  We are synchconizing with ntp pool servers as follows.

      server 0.ca.pool.ntp.org
      server 1.ca.pool.ntp.org
      server 2.ca.pool.ntp.org

      Any ideas?

      Thx

          Have you set xen.independent_wallclock = 1

          in the sysctl of the VM guest?

          Or are you talking about the manager? and is the manager running as a guest? Are you using PVM?

            Dude!

            It seems to be working according to your log, but not always or not persistently. There could be many reason.

            I suggest to start here:

              Thanks for the reply.  This is a guest that will be running OVM manager, but for a different pool.

              This is a vanilla install of OL6 PVM.  We have about 15 guests running OL5 or OL6 in this pool.  They all use NTP but this guest is the only one so far that is getting these error messages in the syslog.

              I've tried in the past to set the xen.independent_wallclock parameter in sysctl.conf, but have had no success,  If I run sysctl -p, I get the following.

              # sysctl -p

              net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0

              net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1

              net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0

              kernel.sysrq = 0

              kernel.core_uses_pid = 1

              net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1

              kernel.msgmnb = 65536

              kernel.msgmax = 65536

              fs.file-max = 6815744

              kernel.sem = 250 32000 100 128

              kernel.shmmni = 4096

              kernel.shmall = 1073741824

              kernel.shmmax = 4398046511104

              net.core.rmem_default = 262144

              net.core.rmem_max = 4194304

              net.core.wmem_default = 262144

              net.core.wmem_max = 1048576

              fs.aio-max-nr = 1048576

              net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 9000 65500

              error: "xen.independent_wallclock" is an unknown key

              In any event, I don't have this parameter set in any of my guests and ntp is able to set and keep the clock synced going forward.

              Thanks,

                Thanks,

                I went through that entire document.  No help there.
