Can't start the Database and can't backup

What is happening now. My database connection is not stable so can't do the backup.

I spent two days trying unsuccessfully. Please check the following print screen :

How about reading the alert.log file of the database instance to see if and why it is crashing (requiring a restart) ?

    Some possibilities :

    1.  A Background process (PMON, SMON, LGWR,  DBWR etc) detects an error or some corruption and fails, bringing down the database instance.

    2.  A Background process is being killed by some monitoring process  (e.g. Linux OutOfMemory killer or some other daemon or process)

    3.  Oracle detects corruption in the SYSTEM or Undo Tablespace and crashes

Why are you starting as one user, then becoming root, just to become 'oracle'.  If you are going to to DBA stuff, you need to log on as oracle to start.

So, you shell out of sqlplus, spawning another process that is a child of that instance of sqlplus .... then from that dependentant process, start yet another instance of sqlplus ...  so now our process stack looks like this:

    user test

       user root

          user oracle

             sqlplus

               shell

                  sqlplus

    Database mounted.

    Database opened.

    SQL>

    SQL>

    SQL> !

And from there you shell out yet again.  Now your process stack is

    user test

       user root

          user oracle

             sqlplus

               shell

                  sqlplus

                     shell

    [oracle@localhost ~]$ cd /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/bin

    [oracle@localhost bin]$ set ORACLE_SID=db11gr2

    [oracle@localhost bin]$

    [oracle@localhost bin]$ echo $ORACLE_SID

    db11gr2

    [oracle@localhost bin]$

    [oracle@localhost bin]$ rman target /

    user test

       user root

          user oracle

             sqlplus

               shell

                  sqlplus

                     shell

                       rman

At this point my head is spinning.

The first rule when one finds oneself in a hole is to stop digging.

You don't need to do a SET DBID to do a backukp.  You set it in certain cases for a recovery.

Please tell how that can be resolve. Thanks. Dan.

First, log on directly as oracle.

Second, don't keep shelling out of one process to do another

Third, when you hit an unexplained 'disconnected' error, STOP.  Go read the alert log. Solve the error.

    I don't see an alert.log only the listener.log.

Please don't post the XML file -- it is difficult to read.  The plain-text versions are in the trace directory

For cryin' out loud, do you actually expect people to read that?  Was it really necessary to dump hundreds of lines of a dump/trace/log?

And as Hemant said, that's not even the alert log, which is what was asked for.

The alert log (and the readable version, not the html) will be found at $ORACLE_BASE/diag/rdbms/<oraclesid>/<oraclesid>/trace/alert*

    Hello Stevens and others!

Since an abnormal shutdown due to power outage I can't start the DB.

    Thanks for your time.

As requested here is the alert log file:

This condition can occur when a backup controlfile has

             ALTER TABLESPACE <tablespace_name> ADD TEMPFILE

Alternatively, if these temporary tablespaces are no longer

needed, then they can be dropped.

Why are all the messages dated 03-Jul-2013 ?  We'd need to see recent messages.

There was a CREATE CONTROLFILE,  a Change of CHARACTERSET etc on 03-Jul.

The last few errors on 03-July are ORA-609

ORA-00609: could not attach to incoming connection

Cause: Oracle process could not answer incoming connection

Action: If the situation described in the next error on the stack can be corrected, do so; otherwise contact Oracle Support.

    Hi Dan,

Please edit this reply by removing this alertlog.xml dumped in the  midle of this thread.

I took 15 min to reach the  end of this thread, almost got  "out of memory".

    Hi !

you asked: 'Why are all the messages dated 03-Jul-2013 ? ' :

I don't know why I keep having 03-Jul though the dates and time on my machine are of Oct.

I will follow you advice and will keep you posted.

    Thanks for your help.

    Dan.

    Hi Levi!

As you requested the alertlog.xml file was removed.

    Sorry about that.

I don't know why I keep having 03-Jul though the dates and time on my machine are of Oct.

Dates and Time in my alert_db11gr2.log are still of 03-Jul though my computer is showing the correct dates and time.

    Dan.

Possibly, you are looking at the wrong alert log file ?  Maybe the instance is now writing to a different location ?
