rman backup parameter

Hi all,

11.2.0.1

aix 6.1

I have run rman backup using:

run

{

crosscheck archivelog all;

crosscheck backup;

delete noprompt expired backup;

delete noprompt expired archivelog all;

delete noprompt obsolete;

backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog format 'db_%U';

backup current controlfile for standby format 'ctrl_stby_%U';

backup current controlfile format 'ctrl_%U';

}

Since I did not specify the directory full path, I presume it will use the default FRA.

Then I checked the FRA and I see theres files

oracle@server:/u02/oracle/fast_recovery_area/prod/backupset/2013_09_20>ls -l

total 1011824

-rw-------    1 oracle   dba         1114112 Sep 20 17:58 o1_mf_ncsnf_TAG20130920T175850_93r72vvp_.bkp

-rw-------    1 oracle   dba         1114112 Sep 20 18:04 o1_mf_ncsnf_TAG20130920T180300_93r7fnny_.bkp

-rw-------    1 oracle   dba       515825664 Sep 20 18:04 o1_mf_nnndf_TAG20130920T180300_93r7bnlb_.bkp

What are these files? Where are the format 'db_%U' and 'ctrl_stby_%U' and 'ctrl_%U' I specified above?

Thanks a lot,

zxy

    Hi,

    Have you checked with the list backup command, what the pices looks like for your backup set.

    How ever when you run the backup command it will show you where it write the backup. so you can check your log as well.

    Thanks Dk,

    I checked in the log that the controls files and archive log backups went to ORACLE_HOME/dbs?

    I am confused This command >>backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog format 'db_%U';

    said it already includes control file, spfile, and archivelog?

    So I do not need this one anymore?> backup current controlfile format 'ctrl_%U';

    According to the documentation (which you really NEVER read prior to asking a question) the format clause is IGNORED when you backup in the FRA.

    You can use the TAG clause though.

    You will never get anywhere when you continue to refuse to read documentation.

    You are already a true PEST to this forum.

    SHAME to you!!!

    If you would read documentation, you would not be confused, and you would not have asked this question.

    GO AWAY here!!!

    Hi Sybrand and Dk,

    When I run the rman backup lots of files are written in my ORACLE_HOME/dbs which messed up the folder

    I was thinking it will defaulted to the FRA directory? Now I do not know which one to delete/cleanup because I do not want to mess up the dbs folder.

    Can you identify which one is output of the RMAN so I can move it to FRA?

    oracle@server:/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/dbs>ls -lt

    backup as compressed backupset database format 'db_%U' plus archivelog format 'arch_%U';

    I think if you want to backup in the FRA, you must delete format

    Thanks Dk,

    I got this show all:

    RMAN> show all;

    RMAN configuration parameters for database with db_unique_name BATCH are:

    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default

    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default

    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF; # default

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default

    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default

    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default

    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default

    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default

    CONFIGURE COMPRESSION ALGORITHM 'BASIC' AS OF RELEASE 'DEFAULT' OPTIMIZE FOR LOAD TRUE ; # default

    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default

    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/dbs/snapcf_batchsit.f'; # default

    The files being created as default are:

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default

    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/dbs/snapcf_batch.f'; # default

    But it does not match here:

    -rw-------    1 oracle   dba         7716864 Sep 20 18:04 snapcf_batch.f

    -rw-------    1 oracle   dba         7766016 Sep 20 18:04 ctrl_0jokbf5p_1_1

    What is the difference of controlfile and snap controlfile? Why lots of copies of control files?

    I think snapshot controlfile is a temporary file for backup controlfile

    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16795/rman.htm#i455026
    =====
    The snapshot control file is a copy of a database control file created in an operating system-specific location by RMAN.
    RMAN creates the snapshot control file so that it has a consistent version of a control file to use when either resynchronizing the recovery catalog or backing up the control file.

    Hi all,

    I remove the formatting using:

    run

    {

    crosscheck archivelog all;

    crosscheck backup;

    delete noprompt expired backup;

    delete noprompt expired archivelog all;

    delete noprompt obsolete;

    backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog;

    backup current controlfile for standby ;

    backup current controlfile ;

    }

    And I got output in dbs:

    -rw-------    1 oracle   dba         7716864 Sep 23 08:38 snapcf_batchsit.f

    And output in FRA archive:

    -rw-------    1 oracle   dba          243200 Sep 23 08:38 ../../archivelog/2013_09_23/o1_mf_1_1795_93z3d60w_.arc

    And output in FRA backupset

    -rw-------    1 oracle   dba         7766016 Sep 23 08:38 ../../backupset/2013_09_23/o1_mf_ncnnf_TAG20130923T083833_93z3dbk3_.bkp

    How do I know which of the above is the control file, standby controlfile, spfile, etc ?

    Thanks a lot

    The snapshot control file is a copy of a database control file created in an operating system-specific location by RMAN.

    RMAN creates the snapshot control file so that it has a consistent version of a control file to use when either resynchronizing the recovery catalog or backing up the control file.

    I hate this lots of controlfiles

    When recovering from disaster, which control file should I use? snapcf, orig cf, or standby cf, or all of the above?

    Thanks a lot,
