How can this be achieved in APEX? The site sits in a JAVA container and is served by Tomcat which is behind a MS proxy / firewall.
Will I need to install a web server to enable URL rewriting, and if so how would I write the rules to rewrite the URLs?
If you do not want install e.g. Apache and use rewrite these blog posts might help

In Kris's blog, there is explanation about how to perform Gets, but you cannot submit a page or use DA.
I opened an SR about three weeks ago regrading this, but they did not give answer till now... So, I sought consulting and
currently, someone is working on it to enable us to submit the page and use DA... He will share the solution with us.

The only thing I did not set up were parameters? But when viewing my apex application the URL's have not changed? Do I need to change a setting in the actual apex app to use niceurl restful service?
