    database upgrades fails

    46075007-caf2-4b2f-b5d6-be6bc7f79c5b

      Platform: SQL Server 2008

      Running P6 R7 SP5

      When trying to upgrade the database to R8, database upgrades fails without any error message.

      I just ran the dbsetup.bat and filled the "connection information" then press next and I got the "finish" screen directly without the "Ready to begin upgrading data" or "Primavera database setup wizard" and when check I found that no upgrade has been done.

      please assest.

          Hi,

          I've seen this problem in the past when accidentally trying to upgrade an R8.x database using the wrong dbsetup (i.e tryign to upgrade PPM 8.1 with EPPM 8.2 utilty) but as you are going from v7 this doesn't seem to apply.

          I would suggest setting the dbsetup utility to log everything and see if anything useful shows in the error log.

          To do this:

          1. Right-Click on on the Java Based utility and select Edit (EX: DBSetup.bat/Validate.bat)
          2. Modify the line that beings with  "START javaw %JVM_PROPERTIES%" to "java %JVM_PROPERTIES%" (remove START and change javaw to java), then save.
          3. Open a command prompt window (Start, Run, and enter CMD)
          4. Change directory (cd) to the P6 database setup folder.

          5. Set the environment parameter by entering the following in in the command prompt

               set DBMT_DEV_LOG_LEVEL=info

          6. Run the java based utility by entering the application name.

          Example: dbsetup.bat

          7. Now the java based tool will launch with additional logging being outputted to the console.

          I haven't used this for a while but I think you can also use the >> command to pipe the output to a text file.

          Regards

          Alex

            Thanks Alex for reply,

            I've tried the above steps and I got the same action.

            I can't see any strange in the console logging.

              Hi,

              I can't see anything indicating an error in that.

              It looks basically the same as mine up until the point where it does the TRANSITION to finish.

              Mine has:

              DEV [INFO] : Setting job property PM.PRODUCT.KEY -> PM

              DEV [INFO] : Setting job property EXP.SCHEMA.NAME.STRING.KEY -> PM

              DEV [INFO] : Setting job property SCHEMA.INFO.LIST.KEY -> [PM_08_03_00]

              DEV [INFO] : Adding upgrade map from schema (PM_08_03_00) for type PM

              com.primavera.database.tools.dbmt.ProductUpgradeVersionMap@15364ee5

              DEV [INFO] : Retrieving upgrade map for schema PM

              com.primavera.database.tools.dbmt.ProductUpgradeVersionMap@15364ee5

              DEV [INFO] : Setting job property PRODUCT.INSTALLED.VERSION.KEY -> 0700.0001.0001.0003

              DEV [INFO] : Setting job property version -> p70sp3

              One thing I did notice from your log is that it looks like you are going to v8.0.0 when you should be going to v8.3 (and preferably 8.3.1)

              If using the newer version doesn't help (or if for some reason you have to go to v8.0) then you could also try setting the debug mode to 'debug' instead of 'info' and see if this shows up where it is failing.

              It would also be useful to know if you are trying to upgrade to a PPM or EPPM database.

              Regards

              Alex

                Hi,

                I've tried upgradeing to 8.3 but I got the same console logging and the same failed to upgrade, also when try setting the debug mode to 'debug' instead of 'info' I've got the same console logging....!!!

                only one new error that I got when I use the validate.bat

                "Error in Comparing database schema :  NullPointerException (java.lang.NullPointerException)"

                does it mean anything?

                thanks.

                  Hi,

                  Can you run the following query and let me know the result. This will tell is the schema version you are working with

                  select database_version from prefer;

                  Can you also confirm if you are restoring the DB after each failed attempt?

                  Regards

                  Alex
