ASM Disk groups are not found during RAC Grid Installation and Configuration

Hi,

I am trying to instal Oracle RAC 11g R2 in VMware, where openfiler is used for shared storage. I have Configured ASM also. But While asked for disk group during Install and Configure Steps I see no Disk to select from.

Please check my fdisk -l and oracleasm listdisk results.

[root@node1 ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sdb: 102.3 GB, 102341017600 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 12442 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk identifier: 0xc68b6bd9

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System

/dev/sdb1               1        2612    20980858+  83  Linux

/dev/sdb2            2613        5224    20980890   83  Linux

/dev/sdb3            5225       12442    57978585   83  Linux

Disk /dev/sdc: 102.3 GB, 102341017600 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 12442 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk identifier: 0xc68b6bd9

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System

/dev/sdc1               1        2612    20980858+  83  Linux

/dev/sdc2            2613        5224    20980890   83  Linux

/dev/sdc3            5225       12442    57978585   83  Linux

Please notice that /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc is showing while they are single volume, Disk Identifiers are same  0xc68b6bd9. I don't know why.

But I have configured ASM on /dev/sdc

[root@node1 ~]# /usr/sbin/oracleasm listdisks

But at the time when I have to select disk groups during Installation and Configuration I get no disks to select from. That's why I cant's proceed further.

Please help.

    You have done the stamping/naming of disks. Can you re-try and check once again.

    Hi Hasan,

    Did you initiate the oracleasm, using  "oracleasm init" command and configured it?

    Also make sure that you have installed the oracle asmlib packages

    And once the disks are marked as asm disks, you need to create a LUN using open filer, Then only open filer can manage your disks.

    Inorder for openfiler to work, you need to install extra packages to detect the disks after booting the OS

    Hi

    [root@node1 ~]# /usr/sbin/oracleasm configure

    ORACLEASM_ENABLED=true

    ORACLEASM_UID=grid

    ORACLEASM_GID=asmadmin

    ORACLEASM_SCANBOOT=true

    ORACLEASM_SCANORDER=""

    ORACLEASM_SCANEXCLUDE=""

    ORACLEASM_USE_LOGICAL_BLOCK_SIZE="false"

    [root@node1 ~]# /usr/sbin/oracleasm scandisks

    Reloading disk partitions: done

    Cleaning any stale ASM disks...

    Scanning system for ASM disks...

    [root@node1 ~]# /usr/sbin/oracleasm listdisks

    Same result found for node 2 also, and Also initiated with

    oracleasm init on both nodes.

    Since you can see the disks with ASMLib, the issue lies with the ASM instance being able to see the disks. What is the value of asm_diskstring within the ASM instance? If you're using ASMLib, the value would be ORCL:* or (and there are a few reasons why you'd have to do it this way) use /dev/oracleasm/disks/*

    If this does not show the disks, then the issue is likely one of permissions. The ORACLEASM_UID=grid and ORACLEASM_GID=asmadmin so the disks should be owned by grid:asmadmin. I assume you're invoking ASMCA as grid; if not, do that.
