    Installing EM on a machine that has XE installed - is it possible?

    user5183927

      First of all I'm a relative noobie to Oracle.  I'm trying to stand-up a small database on a local workstation for testing, configuring and general local use.  I have XE installed, but would also like to install more robust tools like EM - to have in my hip pocket - for future use.  First of all, is it even possible?  During the install of EM 12c I get to the screen in the wizard that wants the following DB connection information.  I have entered what I know, but I'm not sure of the Service/SID parameter.

      Database Host Name:          127.0.0.1

      Port:                                     8080

      Service/SID:                         XE

      SYS Password:                     ************

      I get the following error message....

      ERROR:Exception occurred while connecting to database. Check the connection details of the database you specified and retry.

      IO Error: Got minus one from a read call

      Unable to connect to the database and validate whether it is a supported database due to one of the following reasons:

          (1) Incorrect credentials

          (2) Listener may be down

          (3) Database may be down

      Any ideas?  Rick

                  Yes, the Express Edition.  /etc/hosts/ ?  Here's the output of the commands;

                    Here's another twist...  When I installed XE I don't recall creating a SYS user.  And furthermore I don't recall this restriction below on the passwords.

                    • Specify Administrator Password: Password you specified contains invalid characters. Ensure that your password is at least 8 characters long, contains only alphanumeric values and underscore(_), starts with a letter, and contains at least one numeric value.

                    According to my notes, I did create a system user with only a 6-char password and it was accepted okay.  This may be part of the problem?  I assume the SYS Password requested is the system password for the DB when I created it?  Or is it the password to the XE application?
